This would normally be when I’d post this week’s Microjam, but we’re switching things up here at Songweaver Industries, which was what I’ve been calling my website until four seconds ago when I read this aloud. I love writing music, but one downside is that, with several game soundtracks currently underway, a project for a kid’s educational show, numerous personal side ventures, and a Microjam every week, it doesn’t leave me a lot of time to simply play my instrument for fun. And by instrument, I mean the spoons. My kitchen-utensils-only EP debuted to high critical acclaim; Spin Magazine called it “absolutely baffling.” But since the mainstream doesn’t seem ready to accept anything you can buy in packages of 50 at IKEA as a real instrument, I’ve also been missing my second love, the piano.
So, starting today, Microjams are going bi-weekly. Every other week will now feature my new, erm . . .feature, which I’ve dubiously titled “Cover Corner” until I think of something better, which I won’t, because you all lowered your expectations of my long ago. I’ll be doing a piano arrangement of a new song with every installment, and they’ll all be whatever the hell I feel like. Lots of video game music, of course, with maybe some movie or TV thenes thrown in. Maybe I’ll hit you with a little Kabalevsky one week, you don’t know. Stop typecasting me.
To start things off, I’m doing one of my favorite tracks from one of my favorite games of all time: “Dragon Roost Island” from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Listen, Listen!
I’ve got a pretty lengthy list of songs I’m excited to do arrangements of, but if you’ve got any requests, feel free to hit me up in the comments, or via email at ryan (at) ryanike.com! Thanks for listening!
